FIRST ALERT: We'll have to dodge some rain and storms during the holiday weekend

  • Alert Days are posted for part of your Memorial Day Weekend into next week (Sunday through Wednesday).
  • Alberto has formed in the tropics.
  • The storm is expected to move north into the Gulf of Mexico through the holiday weekend.
  • Alberto is forecast to make landfall along the northern Gulf Coast early next week.
  • While the center of the track will stay far west of the Palmetto State, we will still see tropical downpours at times here in the Midlands, which could produce some localized flooding.
  • Rain chances will grow late Sunday into Monday. The rain will stick around into Tuesday and Wednesday as Alberto weakens over land.
  • Some areas could see between two and three inches of rain by the middle of next week. If the storm's track changes, our rainfall estimates will change as well.
  • High temperatures will be in the 80s over the next several days.

Keep your rain gear nearby as we move through your Memorial Day Weekend and beyond. We're tracking a good chance of rain and storms.  A lot of that rain will be enhanced from Alberto spinning in the tropics.  Alert Days are posted late Sunday through Wednesday.

Subtropical Storm Alberto formed in the western Caribbean Friday.  The storm is expected to move north into the Gulf of Mexico as we move through the weekend.  Alberto is forecast to make landfall along the northern Gulf Coast early next week.  Heavy rain and tropical-storm-force winds are expected along the Gulf Coast late this weekend into early next week.

While the center of the track will stay far west of the Midlands, we will still see some impacts from Alberto before it makes landfall and even after it's over land.  How so?  As Alberto moves north, combined with an area of high pressure to our east, these two systems will funnel a good deal of moisture in our area, which will enhance some of the rain and storms expected here.  In fact, some of that rain could cause some localized flooding. Turn around, don't drown!

So, as we move through our Friday night, a few showers and storms are possible.  As we continue losing the heating of the day, the wet weather will dissipate.  Otherwise, we'll see partly to mostly cloudy skies. Areas of patchy fog are likely overnight. Low temperatures will be in the upper 60s and lower 70s.

For Saturday, we'll see low clouds and fog to start.  A few isolated showers are possible in the morning, then we'll see another chance of storms by afternoon. Otherwise, expect partly to mostly cloudy skies. Highs will be in the mid and upper 80s.

Sunday is an Alert Day, especially the latter part of the day.  We might, in fact, start the day dry. It looks like a lot of the heavy rain might move in by Sunday evening and Sunday night.  We'll keep you posted.  Be careful on the roads.  High temperatures will be in the mid 80s.

Monday is also an Alert Day.  Scattered showers and storms are likely on Memorial Day as more of Alberto's moisture is scooped up into the Midlands. Make sure you have a backup plan for any of your holiday events. Some of the rain will be heavy at times. Otherwise, we'll see mostly cloudy skies. Highs will be in the low 80s.

As Alberto weakens over land, we will continue to see a good chance of rain and storms over the area into Tuesday and Wednesday.  Some minor flooding is possible.

Some areas could see between two and three inches of rain by the middle of next week.  If there is any shift in the track of this storm, we could see more rain (or less).  Stay with your WIS First Alert Weather Team for constant updates.
