Urology encompasses the entire realm of the urinary system, including the kidneys (kidney stones and tumors), bladder, prostate, testicle, penis, and other systems. In simple terms, Dr. Thomas B. Edmunds is a specially trained plumber, fixing what is leaky or blocked (big prostates), removing bad pieces of plumbing (cancer) and otherwise looking after the entire urinary tract. Because of patient numbers, and our desire to give each patient as much time as they need, Dr. Edmunds has chosen to limit his urological practice to the diagnoses and procedures / surgeries that he really enjoys performing and feels can deliver in an expert manner.

  • When parts of the urinary system are not functioning as they should, symptoms can vary dramatically. Symptoms can be mild, moderate or severe; they can exist or be nonexistent. But keep in mind, if symptoms are present one day and gone the next, that does not necessarily mean the condition, disorder or disease is gone.   • Bladder cancer is a disease in which cancer cells form in the tissues of the bladder. Over 67,000 new cases of bladder cancer are diagnosed in the United States each year. It is the fourth most common cancer among men and ninth most common among women in the U.S. Fortunately, most people with bladder cancer will not die of the disease but it does claim about 13,000 lives each year.

  • The kidneys are two small fist-sized organs located behind the abdomen on each side of the spine above your waist. By producing urine, kidneys remove toxic by-products and excess fluids from the body to help maintain a critical balance of salt, potassium and acid.

  • Kidney Cancer can form in the small tubes inside the kidney. Those tubes located in the center of the kidney where urine collects, are used to filter blood. Each year in the United States, kidney cancer is diagnosed in about 54,000 Americans and more than 13,000 do not survive the disease. 1 Kidney cancer is slightly more common in men and is usually diagnosed between the ages of 50 and 70 years. The most common kidney cancer is called renal cell carcinoma.

  • Prostate CancerProstate Cancer

  • The prostate is normally about the size and shape of a walnut. It's located below the bladder. It surrounds the urethra (the tube that carries urine and semen out of the body). The function of the prostate is to produce a fluid. This fluid mixes with fluid from the seminal vesicles and sperm from the testicles to form semen. The testicles also make hormones called androgens (such as testosterone). These hormones help the prostate to function.

  • Cancer is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. Prostate cancer begins in the prostate, a small gland below the bladder. As the cancer grows, it can spread beyond the prostate to nearby organs or to other parts of the body. In many cases, prostate cancer grows slowly.

  • Being told that you have cancer is frightening. But most men diagnosed with prostate cancer don't die from it. Even though a cure can't be guaranteed, treatment can often keep the cancer under control. As you learn more about this disease, you'll better understand what it means for your future. You can also learn ways to live well with prostate cancer.

  • Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is a chemical made by prostate tissue. The PSA level (amount of PSA in the blood) is tested to evaluate a man's risk of prostate cancer. In general, a high or rising PSA level may mean an increased cancer risk. Discuss your PSA test results with your doctor and ask what they mean for your situation.
