Toyota surpasses Chrysler in auto sales in Aug., total vehicles sold up

(National) Sept. 5, 2003 - The auto industry's "Big Three" is now the "Big Four." Toyota outsold Chrysler in August, the first time one of Detroit's "Big Three" automakers has fallen to fourth place.

Officials say Toyota's best month ever helped the industry have it's best month of the year. Experts say that surge in auto sales is fueling expectations that this will be a strong quarter for the economy.

With a majority of auto-makers reporting, analysts say annual sales of North American-made cars, pickups and SUVs hit 15.5 million in August, easily surpassing median forecasts of 13.9 million. This measure excludes exports, since they subtract from domestic economic growth, and is used by analysts in estimates for monthly retail sales.

Industry figures suggest August was the second best month ever for sales of North American-made light trucks, which includes SUVs. Sales of domestic cars rose 300,000 from July's marks, pushing total vehicle sales up about 11 percent.

The auto market makes up about a quarter of total retail sales. Final figures are expected to be released next week.
