COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A giraffe was born at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in Columbia on Monday, Feb. 9.
The zoo's newest addition, Lewis will make its official debut on exhibit Thursday morning.
"We have been waiting on this guy for quite some time," said John Davis, curator of mammals at Riverbanks, in a written news release. "Giraffe gestation lasts between 14 and 15 months. We first determined that Sharon was expecting in January, 2008, and we are glad to finally be able to share this new arrival with the community."
The ten-day-old reticulated giraffe calf measures approximately 5'5" tall and weighs 126 pounds.
Senior keeper Andrea Mueller says, "Mom and baby are doing great! Mom is really taking care of him and he's getting lots of nutrients from her and he's learning the routine from her."
Zoo officials say it did not take him long to make his way to all four feet. By 10:30am he was standing and shortly after he began to nurse. The calf has bonded well with his mother and she is doing an excellent job caring for him.
Lewis will nurse for about one year and will remain at Riverbanks for two to three years before being placed at another zoo.
