COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A bill that would change the way women get abortions in South Carolina took a step forward.
The House Judiciary Committee passed the bill with no amendments.
Under current law, women are required to receive brochures about fetal development and abortion alternatives then wait one hour to have the procedure done.
The new bill would require women to wait 24 hours after a clinic performs an ultrasound before the procedure can take place.
The only exception would be if the mother's life is threatened by the pregnancy.
Victims of rape would also have to wait 24 hours after an ultrasound.
The proposal now heads to the full house.
