WIS News 10 - Columbia, South Carolina | Atlantic Beach mayor arrested 8 days into term

ATLANTIC BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Eight days after taking office as Atlantic Beach's mayor, Retha Pierce has been arrested and released from the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on trespassing charges.
Pierce says she arrested around 2:30pm Wednesday at the Atlantic Beach Town Hall after the Interim Town Manager Kenneth McIver called the police on her.
WIS News 10's sister station WMBF spoke with Pierce as she was being transported to the J. Reuben Long Detention Center by Atlantic Beach police officers Wednesday afternoon.
Pierce says she had a meeting Wednesday with McIver and asked the town clerk to make copies of a memo on professionalism in the workplace. Pierce told she got into an argument with the town clerk and an employee asked Pierce to leave.
Pierce says she simply refused to leave.
Atlantic Beach Police Chief Randy Rizzo says Pierce was arrested for disorderly conduct and trespassing.
Pierce is expected to appear in court Thursday for a hearing on a previous DUI charge pressed against her.
