COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - WIS News 10 has learned that embattled River Springs Elementary School principal Melissa Cole has resigned.
A Lexington Richland District Five spokeswoman says Cole resigned, effective Monday.
Cole had been on leave. Her departure comes almost three weeks after the resignation of district superintendent Dr. Scott AndersEn.
About a week ago, her status was the subject of private meetings at the school led by top district officials including interim superintendent Dr. Herb Berg.
Divorce papers filed by AndersEn's wife accused him of having an affair with a woman identified as "Melissa Cole."
Earlier this month, teachers and staff members rallied in support of Cole, while district officials refused to say why she was on leave.
The district is not saying why Cole resigned and at last report had issued no statement on the resignation. It comes just three days before students report for their first day of classes.
An assistant prinicipal, Boyd Hainsworth, is running the school.
The district is working on finding a replacement for Cole.
