KERSHAW COUNTY, SC (WIS) - It's a parody of the 24 Hours of LeMans, a race for super expensive sports cars in France.
Here's the deal -- buy yourself an old junker car and race it, but there's a catch: you can only spend $500.
So you are probably thinking, ‘$500? That cannot be safe!" Luckily, the safety equipment is not included in that price.
The budget seems small to some, but some drivers think it's just the right amount.
"They say it's $500, but it's an unlimited budget," one driver boasted.
The drivers will need the protection. Eighty cars will pile on to this track Saturday.
"When you have that much traffic, you won't be short on action," one driver said.
And you get rewarded for winning and creativity. The 24 Hours of LeMons champ gets $1,500 in nickels. Despite the small payout, the competitive spirit remains alive.
"We want to win," one driver puts simply.
There are also awards for the coolest looking car -- like a pink pickup, a taxi, the dog, and the "Tour de France" car, bikes and all.
"We need the bikes on top so if the car breaks down, the driver has a way home," the driver said as he pointed out the bikes on top the car.
And it looks like a lot of teams may need a lift after this one.
