Red Wing Rollerway skaters worry about rink's future

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Red Wing Rollerway has been the destination in the Midlands for families to enjoy a day of skating.

However, the rink is currently in danger of closing its doors for good. The "For Sale" sign in front of the building has people wondering what the future will hold for the rink.

Austin Jackson says the family atmosphere is a big attraction to the place.

"For me, it's a place where kids, teens and adults can have fun," Jackson said.

Bianca Ndaba learned to skate at the rink.

"It's a fun place to be," Ndaba said. "Our children like to come here."

For CJ Peterson, the place got him hooked; he drives all the way from Florence just to skate here. The news of the possible sale surprised him.

"I was just shocked," Peterson said. "I got a home now. I like the skating rink."

Skaters worry that the rink might get turned into a business instead of what it was built for.

"Maybe it will be a nice restaurant or a nice church, but really I want it to stay a skating rink," Jackson said.

Skaters are getting in those extra laps just hoping they won't be the last.
