Daniel JacksonSUMTER, SC (WIS) - The man who Sumter officials say placed a bogus phone call for a pizza delivery, gunned down the deliveryman, and ran off with the food has turned himself in.
Police say 20-year-old Daniel Deangelo Jackson turned himself in to Sumter deputies at around 9:00pm Wednesday. He's charged with armed robbery and murder.
Jackson turned himself in the same day his alleged victim, 46-year-old Bill Flexon, was laid to rest.
Flexon worked for at Sambino's Pizza in Sumter for four years. The retired military man was known as their best delivery driver.
"Perfect employee," comments owner Rodney Knudson. Knudson says Flexon was on the job Saturday night when a call came in to deliver pizza to 1120 Cherryvale Drive, only this call was like no other.
Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis says, "It was a prank call and was pre-planned to be a robbery when he arrived."
Sheriff Dennis says no one was even living at that address. Knudson says, "We had some deputies dining in and they got a call saying there was a shooting in the Cherryvale area. My wife overheard that and said, 'Hey, Bill is delivering to Cherryvale right now.'"
Investigators say Flexon delivered the pizza to Cherryvale Drive, some sort of struggle took place and he was shot in the chest. When officers got there, they found money in the pizza deliveryman's pocket, but the pizza was gone.
"Twenty minutes later I got a visit from the deputy with the news," says Knudson. "The first thing out of my mouth was robbery - and they said no, worse."
The 46-year-old driver known for bringing candy canes with deliveries at Christmas was dead. Witnesses say they saw three men run from the scene.
Monday is the first day the restaurant is open without their loyal employee.
Sheriff Dennis says, "This case - gentleman out there trying to earn an honest living, and for someone to commit a crime of this type ... We take all these cases seriously."
Police say they are still investigating, and more arrests are expected in the murder.
