Mom speaks out about charged Kershaw County teacher

Posted: Updated:

KERSHAW COUNTY, SC (WIS) - North Central High School teacher Kenneth Shults is charged with hitting a student on the bottom. He's also accused of forcing students to act out sex scenes in class.

Now another mom says she has Shults on tape admitting to hitting her daughter.

"I hit her on the top of the head. I did that. I reached over and popped her. I reached over and tapped her on the shoulder."

Cappie Wilson says that's what you hear suspended teacher Thomas Shults admitting that he hit her daughter on the head in class.

Mrs. Wilson says she recorded the conversation when she met Shults at a parent teacher conference.

"Because I didn't know the answer to a question he asked, he slapped me pretty much almost across the face. And then he said he could beat the tar out of me for not putting my name on a test," explains Kaylie Wilson.

That was back in 2005, according Kaylie's mother. She says back then North Central promised her that Shults' actions would go on his permanent record.

We started to look at the Shults case over a month ago, after he was suspended from the high school, accused of making his all female English class act out sex scenes from books they were studying.

Then on December 5th, the sheriff's department charged Shults with assault and battery - saying he slapped one of his students on the behind.

Mrs. Wilson says she was shocked when she heard Shults' record was clean, "You're entrusting the care of your child through them at the school and they don't do anything about it."

Mrs. Wilson says when she met with Shults two years ago, he tried to downplay striking her then 16-year old daughter.

"I was just clowning around. I didn't do anything that I hadn't done in front of a principal, parent or anybody else at Lancaster High School."

"If my student would have hit the teacher, they would have had no problem expelling her. The fact that my child is the victim here they said they would take care of it," says Cappie Wilson.

Kaylie graduated last year but her mom says the school needs to do something about what she says is Shults' inappropriate behavior.
