Kraft Foods announces expansion of Newberry plant

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - The South Carolina Department of Commerce announced that Kraft Foods will expand its Louis Rich plant in Newberry.

Once completed, the expansion will bring 1,000 new jobs to Newberry County and 75,000 additional square feet of manufacturing space.

Currently, Louis Rich produces Oscar Mayer sliced luncheon meats, turkey bacon, deli-shaved meats, chicken breast strips and cuts, and ground turkey. The products are distributed throughout the United States or shipped to other Kraft plants for further processing.  With the expansion, the plant will be able to produce a larger volume of these products.

Kraft currently has approximately 1,700 employees at its Newberry facility, up from 1,260 at the beginning of the year, and anticipates continuing to increase its staffing levels into 2008, ultimately increasing to approximately 2,300 employees.  The added jobs will support increased volume, as well as products that are new to the Newberry facility.
