Kershaw County teacher charged with assault

Posted: Updated:

KERSHAW COUNTY, SC (WIS) - On a case WIS News 10 has been following for weeks, 45-year-old Thomas Shults is now charged with assault and battery. He's a North Central High School teacher.

The Kershaw County Sheriff's Department confirmed late Wednesday afternoon that the honors English teacher and drama club leader was charged with assault and battery. He's accused of inappropriately touching one of his students by slapping her bottom.

In early November, a parent and one of the students in Shults' all-female English class said that Shults would often ask the female student body to act out sexual scenes in class, sometimes using props. Another student filed an incident report with the school resource officer, making similar claims.

North Central High school did not confirm those allegations, only saying Shults was suspended with pay.

When WIS News 10's Kara Gormley checked in with the school on Monday, she was told the investigation into Shults was still ongoing.

She wanted to know if the new charge has affected Shults' position at the school. The superintendent of the Kershaw School District told WIS News 10 that he hasn't heard anything about the new charge. Dr. Frank Morgan says he is waiting to get more information before he makes any comments.
