Head injuries can impair sleeping long-term, according to new study

(San Diego-NBC) April 3, 2007 - People who have suffered a mild head injury are more likely to have problems getting a good night sleep, according to new research.

The study found 40 to 65 percent of patients with a mild brain injury complain of insomnia. That lack of sleep can magnify other symptoms of the injury - like headaches, emotional problems and cognitive skills.

Researchers say a head injury can disrupt a person's ability to move to different stages of the sleep cycle - which cannot be cured with a sleeping pill.

The study was led by researchers at the University of California, San Diego and published in Neurology, April 3, 2007.
