(National-NBC) March 22, 2007 - As colon cancer research progresses, experts cannot deny the impact genetics play. Now a new study confirms your risk for the disease may be in your genes.
Some people are genetically predisposed to develop multiple colon polyps - which in turn increases their risk for colon cancer. Now, by studying mice, a husband and wife research team have identified a gene that can modify that genetic risk by stopping polyp growth.
They found mice that had the gene had 90 percent fewer polyps compared to mice who were not carriers.
More research is needed before it can be tested in humans. The researchers found mice given two copies of the gene died before birth.
The study was published in the journal Genome Research and conducted at Thomas Jefferson University.
