Richland County Deputy found shot to death inside his home

(Lexington County) March 14, 2007 - The investigation into the death of a Richland County Deputy continues.

The deputy was found shot to death inside his home Tuesday night.

There's lots of crime scene tape and lots of police. So far, however, actual details on what happened are very limited.

A Richland County Sheriff's Deputy was found dead inside his Lexington County home on Double Eagle Drive.

His name hasn't been released yet.

Officials say he was shot once in the head. A service revolver was discovered inside the house, but so far no one knows yet exactly what happened.

"It's very hard to investigate another law enforcement officer who's lost his life. Sheriff Leon Lott and myself are saddened by this situation," says Lexington County Sheriff James Metts.

A neighbor called 911 after hearing a gunshot coming from the house. A different neighbor tells News 10 the deputy was a good father.

"He's a great person. He played with both of his kids all the time, who seem very well behaved," said the neighbor.

Because the death involved a law enforcement officer, SLED is now handling the investigation. An autopsy is scheduled for sometime Wednesday.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott wasn't ready to talk about the death of one of his own. However, he said he plans to release more information about the case and the deputy Wednesday.

Count on News 10 to keep you updated on this story as details become available.
