(Spartanburg-AP) February 27, 2007 - There's still almost a year until South Carolina's primary, but eleven GOP hopefuls will face their first test with voters in Spartanburg County during a straw poll this week.
Organizers aren't expecting more than 2,000 people to cast ballots, but residents' phones have been ringing with recorded candidate messages, and mailboxes are filling with glossy campaign brochures in the run-up to Thursday's vote.
Spartanburg isn't alone in testing the early political tides.
Longshot contender US Representative Duncan Hunter won a straw poll in January in an Arizona county, and his campaign has bragged about winning in McCain's home state.
