Candidate John Edwards pushes for 'living wage' at Vanderbilt

(Nashville, TN-AP) February 22, 2007 - Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards calls a proposed wage increase for workers at Vanderbilt University inadequate.

The Democrat says a "great university like Vanderbilt" can do better.

The former North Carolina senator says the "living wage" issue is part of his platform.

He took a moment from campaigning in Nashville to support the Laborers International Union of North America Local 386. The union represents about 600 of Vanderbilt's 20,000 employees in the custodial, grounds, food service and skilled crafts categories.

The union has been trying for about a year to get Vanderbilt to pay a living wage of at least $10.18 an hour. The university's lowest paid workers now earn around $7.55 an hour.
