(Portsmouth, Virginia-AP) January 7, 2002 -- Six South Carolina men have been rescued by the Coast Guard before their commercial fishing boat sank 50 miles southeast of Cape Fear, North Carolina. The Mediterranean Two was based in Little River.
Officials say Alan Brawsaw, Artie Benton, Frank Pruitt, Fred Saunders, Greg France and the boat's captain, Danny Juel had to jump into the sea Sunday and swim to baskets suspended from the helicopters.
Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Carolyn Cihelka says about 15 Coast Guard personnel from Charleston and Elizabeth City, North Carolina, braved 50-knot winds and torrential rain to rescue the men. Lieutenant Peter Stinson says a large wave crashed down on the boat, breaking the pilot house windows and knocking out its radios just after noon. The boat's emergency beacon sent a distress signal to the Coast Guard.
