SC soldier injured in Iraq celebrates life, progress

(Camden) January 20, 2007 - A South Carolina soldier injured in Iraq is celebrating making it home alive. One year ago Saturday, Crystal Davis lost part of her leg fighting in the Iraq war.

This weekend, Camden was the site of a celebration of life for one of South Carolina's bravest.

"I honestly didn't think I was go be walking the year after it happened," said Davis.

But she is. However, it's been a long road for Crystal Davis.

"I wake up and thank the Lord I'm alive and say 'what's in it for me today' and just steer my way into my goals for the future," she told News 10.

A future that she and doctors weren't sure of.

"The left leg, they didn't really know if they were going to keep it and I didn't know if I was going to keep it I was ready to give it a chance, and if it didn't work out I was going to amputate it," Davis said.

Luckily it worked out - she didn't have to lose the rest of her leg.

"I actually kind of jogged a little bit during [Physical Therapy] the other day and it didn't really hurt too much to do it, the next day I was kind of sore," she says.

It is very easy to see that this former soldier is well on her road to recovery, so much so that she is already planning for her next mission.

"She's working real hard to stay in the Army and she wants to be a physical therapist. She says they're not going to look at her and tell her that she can't do that," says her father Jimmy.

And as for her immediate outlook on life, she's got that figured out too.

"This is what she says - 'This is my world and it's going to be my world for a while,'" says Jimmy.

But for now, it's just her party.
