(Tuscaloosa, AL-AP) November 30, 2006 - At least three Alabama newspapers report Thursday that University of Alabama officials have asked for permission to talk to South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier about the school's vacant head coaching job. But a fourth says he has told people close to him that he will not be leaving South Carolina.
Three of the newspapers quote an unnamed official who said the school hopes to persuade Spurrier to sit down for discussions. The Birmingham News says several sources, who were not named, report that Spurrier has informed people close to him that he won't be moving to Tuscaloosa.
Earlier this week, the 61-year-old Spurrier said he had no interest in the Alabama job.
Mike Shula was fired Sunday night after four seasons at the Capstone.
