Spurrier planning to stick with the Gamecocks

(Columbia) November 27, 2006 - There have been rumors flying that University of South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier was considering leaving the Gamecocks, after Alabama football coach Mike Shula was fired Monday.

But Spurrier is trying to discredit that speculation, saying via phone, "I have no intention of leaving South Carolina. It's always flattering when a South Carolina coach is rumored for these big time programs. This one will die down in two or three days, too."

Shula's dismissal followed a 6-and-6 season that ended with three straight losses. The 41-year-old Shula led the Crimson Tide to a 10-and-2 record last season and a victory in the Cotton Bowl. But his teams were winless in four tries against Auburn.

In his four seasons on the job, Shula compiled a 26-and-23 record.
