(Charleston-AP) October 31, 2006 - New evidence discovered in some woods on the Naval Weapons Station could help investigators find out what happened to a 14-year-old boy who vanished from the area nearly a decade ago.
Authorities are not saying what they found beneath the leaves and sticks as they searched a three-thousand-square-foot area with cadaver dogs last week.
A supervisory special agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service says "several items of interest" were turned up but they were not bones.
John Nicks Junior says further investigation will determine whether they are relevant.
The site was excavated with a backhoe across the street from a basketball court where Kevin McClam had frequently played before he disappeared on Easter Sunday in 1997.
The missing person case remained cold until last year. Investigators say information then shifted the focus to a potential homicide.
