Bush focuses on economy in fundraiser appearance

(Sarasota, FL-AP) October 24, 2006 - President Bush told voters in Sarasota, Florida, that Democrats would increase taxes by $500 for every child in a household if given control of Congress.

In the campaigning for this mid-term election, Democrats have argued that recent economic gains are of no benefit to the middle class.

Bush rebutted Tuesday by saying Democrats are "genetically disposed" to raising taxes.

The president appeared at a fundraiser for Republican congressional candidate Vern Buchanan.

Bush's visit to Sarasota included a stop at defense firm that makes cameras for military use in Iraq and Afghanistan. Bush operated one of the devices, and told reports his visit demonstrated his administration's commitment to Iraq.

He's also attending a private GOP fundraiser, which the RNC says has raised $1 million.
