Woman becomes consecrated virgin in rare Catholic ritual

(East Aurora, NY-AP) October 7, 2006 - A western New York woman has dedicated her virginity to Jesus.

In a rare Catholic ceremony, 42-year-old Lori Cannizzaro became a "consecrated virgin" Saturday.

The ceremony in East Aurora was a revival of one of the church's oldest rituals. It's available only to virgins, who agree to abstain from sex so they can dedicate their lives to Jesus Christ.

The idea of consecrated virgins faded in the Middle Ages, but Pope Paul the Sixth restored the rite in 1970.

Cannizzaro, who is not a nun, will continue to live on her own and work as a cook at a seminary in the Buffalo suburb.

According to the US Association of Consecrated Virgins, fewer than 200 women in the United States and 2,000 worldwide have declared their perpetual virginity this way.
