(Pentagon-AP) September 6, 2006 - Beating and sexually humiliating prisoners are among the interrogation techniques officially banned in a new military manual out Wednesday.
Mock executions, hoods, electric shocks, burning and food deprivation are also explicitly banned. So is a technique that simulates drowning.
The new manual updates the last one, which is 14 years old. Officials say some of the revisions are based on lessons learned since the US began holding suspected terrorists following the 9/11 attacks.
It comes after an uproar over the treatment of some Iraqi detainees at a US military prison there. Abu Ghraib became synonymous with allegations of abuse after various photos surfaced. Several soldiers have faced charges.
