(Charleston-AP) August 21, 2006 - An outfielder for the Savannah Sand Gnats, a Class A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, was charged with aggravated assault and battery following a fight outside a restaurant early Monday morning.
According to a police report, 22-year-old Christopher Lance French hit a man three times and knocked him out.
The victim, Joseph Wayne Levan, of Charleston, was taken to a local hospital with head injuries and a perforated eardrum. Police say both men had been drinking.
French of Hobbs, New Mexico, was called up to the Sand Gnats on Saturday from the Gulf Coast League Nationals.
A spokesman for the Sand Gnats said the club had no immediate comment. The team was in Charleston for a four-game series against the River Dogs.
