(Dunn, NC-AP) August 18, 2006 - The Harnett County NAACP will investigate the death of a man who was shot by police as they tried to arrest him for an earlier shooting.
The civil rights organization's local leader says Friday that she'll talk with the family of Matthew Leon Burris and to the police department.
Nineteen-year-old Burris was shot and killed by police Thursday. He'd been sought by police in connection with the shooting a few days earlier of a 17-year-old.
Dunn's interim police chief said Alex Huffman was in critical condition at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill Thursday with a gunshot wound to the back. The hospital didn't return a call seeking an updated condition Friday.
Dunn police say Burris was shot to death because he pulled a gun during a police raid. A witness inside the house says Burris did nothing to threaten officers.
Police chief BP Jones says he'll invite the local NAACP head to discuss the shooting with him. The State Bureau of Investigation also is investigating.
