(Charleston-AP) August 5, 2006 - Charleston Mayor Joe Riley says he will run next year for a ninth term.
Riley announced his decision Friday when he introduced the city's new police chief.
The 63-year-old Riley has been mayor since 1975. He is the longest serving mayor in the city's history.
He helped Charleston rebuild from Hurricane Hugo in 1989, established the Spoleto Festival USA and is credited for leading a renaissance in the Holy City, which attracts millions of visitors a year.
No other candidates have formally announced, but Councilman Henry Fishburne said he is considering taking on Riley next year.
