Chas. lawmaker says if he wanted to shoot utility workers, he would have killed them

(Charleston-AP) July 18, 2006 - A Charleston legislator arrested when his pistol fired after confronting two utility workers says he feared for his life.

Republican Representative Wallace Scarborough says if he had wanted to shoot the workers he would have killed them.

The South Carolina Electric and Gas Company workers were checking for storm damage outside Scarborough's parents' home Saturday night.

The 47-year-old lawmaker was house sitting for his parents.

He said Monday his handgun accidentally discharged as he was walking away from the men.

Scarborough was arrested and spent the night in jail, charged with two counts of assault with intent to kill.

He would be suspended from office without pay if he is indicted on the felony charges.
