Chas. lawmaker arrested after gun brandished at utility workers

(Charleston) July 17, 2006 - Charleston Representative Wallace Scarborough has been arrested after his pistol fired when two utility workers were checking for storm damage in the backyard of his parent's home.

Scarborough took a gun with him Saturday night when he went to investigate flashlights in the backyard of his parent's home where he was house sitting.

The 47-year-old Republican was arrested after showing and pointing a pistol at utility workers and then firing his gun.

South Carolina Electric and Gas Company spokesman Eric Boomhower says two company employees were checking equipment after a series of storms passed through the area.

Jail officials say Scarborough is charged with two counts of assault with intent to kill. He was released Sunday on a personal recognizance bond.

His attorney, Rep. John Graham Altman, relays what Scarborough says happened, "He had his back to them, walking away from them. And they called the police and charged with assault with intent to kill."
