Instead, they found a series of DVDs and videotapes allegedly showing the safe's owner having sex with underage girls.
The DVDs and videotapes were turned over to police, who have charged the safe's owner with child rape and child pornography crimes.
The owner of the safe is a 42-year-old Lawrence man. One of the girls on the recordings says the abuse started when she was eight, and that the man was giving her wine coolers when she was in the fourth grade.
As for the break-in, it's still being investigated. Police say the person who turned the material over to police wasn't connected to the crime.
