Russian navy downplays reports of fire aboard nuclear submarine

(Moscow-AP) April 13, 2006 - Russian media say it was a nuclear submarine fire, but Russia's Navy says it was just some smoldering rags.

A spokesman says a welding spark caused a pile of rags to smolder filling a compartment on a submarine with smoke but he says that does not qualify as a fire or even "an incident." The vessel was docked at a repair yard on the Kamchatka Peninsula.

The Russian Navy spokesman says nobody was hurt and the only consequence was that the compartment had to be aired out.
