Notre Dame professor to lead University of South Carolina Law School

(Columbia-AP) April 6, 2006 - The University of South Carolina Law School has a new dean.

University of Notre Dame law professor Walter "Jack" Pratt will begin at the school on July first.

The appointment comes at a crucial time for the law school, which has struggled to raise money for a new facility and has been slipping in national rankings.

Pratt is a Jackson, Mississippi, native who once clerked for former Chief Justice Warren Burger.

He has worked at Notre Dame since 1986. University of South Carolina spokesman Russ McKinney says Pratt's salary is $260,000 a year.

Previous dean Burnele Powell stepped down in September after just two years. Professor Phil Lacy has been serving as interim dean since January.
