Mother Nature helps fire crews battling California fires.

(Malibu, Calif.-AP) February 9, 2006 - A California fire official says crews are making good headway against fires in Malibu and Orange County and he hopes the improving weather holds up.

Earlier, firefighters worried that 40-mile-an-hour wind gusts would cause flare-ups, but by late Wednesday night, winds were down to 15 to 20 miles-an-hour.

A 34-acre fire near Malibu is 95 percent contained. It had forced school evacuations.

A fire that's burned more than 8,300 acres east of Anaheim and Orange is now 35 percent contained and no longer a threat to homes.

A red flag warning for extreme fire danger has been extended to Saturday for most of Southern California, which is facing another week of hot, dry weather.
