(Columbia) February 4, 2006 - South Carolina participated Saturday in the 6th National Black HIV Awareness Day by offering free HIV screenings.
The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control offered the free HIV screenings at a Five Points' community center in the Martin Luther King Jr. Park.
"African Americans make up about a third of the population in South Carolina. However, they account for 74% of new HIV Aids cases in our state. That's a huge disparity in health, and we've got to do something to narrow the gap," says Linda Brown of DHEC.
If you missed the chance to be screened Saturday, DHEC will offer additional free HIV testing Tuesday, Feb. 7, at its office on Hampton Street.
