Motorcycle rights group supports stop-look-go legislation

(Charleston-AP) January 29, 2006 - A bill introduced in the state Senate would allow bikers to treat sensor-controlled red lights like stop signs.

Motorcycles often are not heavy enough to trigger a signal change at automated intersections.

So riders either sit and wait or break the law by turning right then looping around and turning right again at the green light.

The bill from Senators Phil Leventis and Jake Knotts would allow bikers to go through the intersection if a sensor fails to detect their vehicle and they have waited at least 20 seconds.

Preliminary figures from the Department of Public Safety show 90 motorcycle fatalities and more than 1,000 injuries in 2005.

The department reported 92 fatalities and more than 1,300 injuries in 2004.
