Columbia man arrested on multiple robbery charges

(Lexington) January 26, 2006 - Investigators have charged a Columbia man with committing four robberies over a four-month period at a bank and a federal credit union in the St. Andrews community.

Sheriff James Metts says 39-year-old Ronald Russell "Ronnie" Williams of Columbia was arrested Wednesday on charges that he robbed a bank in Richland County. Willilams was charged Thursday with four counts of entering a bank with the intent to steal.

Williams was charged with robbing the Safe Federal Credit Union on St. Andrews Road on three separate occasions: Aug. 22, 2005; Dec. 8, 2005 and Jan. 10, 2006. Williams was also charged with robbing a Wachovia bank branch office at on St. Andrews Road on Sept. 19, 2005.

Williams, who has an extensive criminal record according to Sheriff Metts, stole an undisclosed amount of money in the robberies. Detectives identified Williams as the robber because he used the same method of operation in each of the robberies, and the physical descriptions of the robbers involved in the robberies matched Williams' physical description.

Williams was being held on Thursday at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Richland County.
