Deadline set by U.S. journalist's kidnappers passes

(Baghdad, Iraq-AP) Jan. 20, 2006 - The deadline set by militants in Iraq threatening to kill American journalist Jill Carroll has passed, and there's no word on her fate.

Kidnappers have threatened to kill her unless U.S. forces free all Iraqi women in military custody.

A U.S. official says a Iraqi-based team of U.S. hostage situation specialists, including FBI agents, has been following several leads in the search. The official says the specialists have been meeting with prominent Iraqis, particularly Sunni Arab politicians who may know the kidnappers.

The day began with an appeal from Carroll's father on Arab TV. He said his daughter is an "innocent woman."
