Custodian finds abandoned twins at Chicago church

(Chicago, Illinois-NBC) Dec. 21, 2005 - Twin babies found at a Chicago church Wednesday morning have been hospitalized and are doing well.

The children, a boy and a girl, were found at North Austin Lutheran Church Wednesday morning by a custodian. The infants were just hours old and still had their umbilical cords attached. They were left in a car seat in a church stairwell.

The newborns were transported to West Suburban Hospital and are listed in good condition.

Authorities have no idea who the children belong to.

Under Illinois's Abandoned Newborn Protection Act, mothers or parents are allowed to anonymously leave their children at a police or fire station or a hospital within 72 hours of birth.
