Barbie abuse reported in Britain

(London-AP) Dec. 19, 2005 - Beheading, burning and microwaving - that's just some of the abuse Barbie dolls suffer at the hands of young girls in Britain.

A researcher there says little girls "see Barbie torture as a legitimate play activity."

Researchers from the University of Bath's marketing and psychology departments questioned 100 children about their attitudes on a range of products. They found Barbie provoked the strongest reaction.

Agnes Nairn says children found "varied and creative" ways to mutilate the toy icon. She says Barbie torture was reported "quite gleefully, across age, school and gender."

The researcher says girls most often said they didn't like Barbie because "she was babyish" and was a symbol of younger childhood. Destroying her was almost like a rite of passage.

Boys, on the other hand, often expressed affection and nostalgia for the British equivalent of GI Joe.

Mattel says Barbie is still the "Number one fashion doll brand."
