Richland Co. sheriff warns of new gang entering Columbia

(Richland) Dec. 12, 2005 - The Richland County Sheriff is concerned about a new gang coming to Columbia.

The gang is called "MS-13," or the "Mara Salvatrucha" gang. Police say it's the most dangerous gang in the country.

It started in El Salvador and its original members were violent guerillas in a civil war.

Sheriff Leon Lott knows this gang and others will get bigger in the Midlands, "We still have growth in our gangs. We by no means have peaked with the number of gangs we're going to have in the Columbia area. It's still growing."

Sheriff Lott says last year, there were 32 known gangs in Columbia with more than 870 members.
