
In a tearful statement to reporters in California, Cunningham said he plans to try to make amends for his actions. He said he's known "great joy and great sorrow" in his life, and that he now knows "great shame."
Cunningham answered "yes, Your Honor" when asked by US District Judge Larry Burns in open court Monday in San Diego if he had taken bribes in exchange for performance of his official duties.
Cunningham sold his home two years ago to a defense contractor at an apparently inflated price. Around the same time that man's company saw its defense revenues triple. Cunningham is a member of a House subcommittee that controls defense dollars.
He entered guilty pleas to charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and tax evasion.
The eight-term congressman is a former Vietnam War flying ace who is known as "Duke." He's known for his interest in defense issues, and for his occasional outbursts.
