(Raleigh, North Carolina-AP) Nov. 17, 2005 - Governor Easley has denied clemency for Elias Syriani, the Charlotte man condemned to death for the 1990 stabbing death of his wife.
The decision came despite pleas from the Syriani children, who had asked the governor and prosecutors to spare their father's life.
Easley said in a statement that he found "no convincing reason" to grant clemency. His attorney is not pursuing any other legal action to stop the execution.
Syriani is scheduled to die at 2am Friday by injection at Central Prison in Raleigh. His three daughters and a son who witnessed the attack on his mother began visiting their father at the prison Thursday morning.
Syriani was convicted in the death of his wife, Teresa, who was stabbed 28 times with a screwdriver in Charlotte. She died 26 days later from the attack that started when she told her husband that she wanted a divorce.
