Study: Cold feet may cause common cold

(National-NBC) Nov. 14, 2005 -  A new study shows that having cold feet, literally, may cause the common cold.

During a recent study 90 participants kept their bare feet in cold water for 20 minutes and then monitored their health for four to five days. About ten percent of the group developed a cold within days.

Researchers say dipping feet into cold water may constrict blood vessels in the nose, reducing the ability to fight off infection.

Researchers also say the participants who developed a cold may have already been exposed to cold germs but were not showing symptoms at the time of the study.

More studies need to be done to confirm the results.

The study was conducted at Cardiff University in England and published in the journal "Family Practice."
