(New Orleans-AP) Oct. 20, 2005 - An independent panel of experts will evaluate the performance of New Orleans area levees during Hurricane Katrina.

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld ordered the outside review in response to criticism for allowing the Army Corps of Engineers to be in charge of investigating its own work.

The army secretary will appoint a panel of engineering and atmospheric experts to work under the direction of the National Academy of Sciences.

The Corps will continue its own investigation, while another probe is being done by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Two other reviews are being done as well, one by scientists and engineers chosen by Louisiana officials and the other by experts chosen by the National Science Foundation.

The Corps of Engineers welcomes the new panel, saying it's important to get as many experts in the field to help on something like this.
