Attorney: Catawbas unlinked to any federal investigation

(Columbia-AP) September 16, 2005 - An attorney for the Catawba Indian Nation says a federal investigation into allegations of election fraud does not involve the tribe.

Attorney Jay Bender says there's no connection with the Catawbas and an investigation into whether three Midlands companies may have violated federal campaign disclosure laws.

A Columbia newspaper says the FBI last month searched the companies' offices, one of which is owned primarily by the York County tribe.

The State newspaper says an FBI agent requesting a search warrant told a federal magistrate the government thinks evidence was being concealed in the offices.

The newspaper says a judge will rule Monday on whether to release a document that prosecutors say would release too much information about the case.
