(Capitol Hill-AP) Sept. 14, 2005 - An attempt to set up a panel to investigate what went wrong with federal, state and local governments' response to Hurricane Katrina has been scuttled.
Establishment of the independent, bipartisan panel patterned after the 9/11 Commission body was proposed by Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. But she was unable to muster the two-thirds majority vote needed to overcome procedural hurdles.
That doesn't necessarily mean the idea is dead.
A CNN-USA Today Gallup poll taken earlier this month shows 70 percent of those surveyed support an independent panel to investigate the government's response to Katrina.
