President Bush gave the order, calling it "a mark of respect" for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Bush plans to return to the region tomorrow, with appearances in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Poplarville, Mississippi. Top government officials, including four Cabinet members, visited devastated areas today.
Defense Secretary Rumsfeld was in New Orleans with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs and other officials.
The most visible high-ranking official today was probably Michael Chertoff of Homeland Security. He was sent to appear on all five Sunday news shows.
On CNN's "Late Edition," Chertoff said, "We are moving the city of New Orleans to other parts of the country."
