Chinese twins prepare to be separated

(Shanghai, China - NBC) August 27, 2005 - A new set of conjoined twins is being prepped for separation surgery.

The girls were born to Chinese farmers on Wednesday and are joined at the stomach and pelvis.

They share one liver, one spleen, one gallbladder and one digestive system.

One baby has congenital heart disease, while the other suffers from congenital problems with the pulmonary artery.

But doctors say neither child is in critical condition. Several tests are being run on the pair before doctors give the all clear for surgery.

According to medical experts, some 45 cases of conjoined twins are born in the world each year.
